Dog that lost a leg given highest army medal
Lucca, a 12-year-old German Shepherd, served with the US Marine Corps for six years and sniffed out munitions.
She eventually lost her front leg after sniffing out a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
Lucca is the 67th animal to be honoured with the medal, which was founded by vet charity PDSA in 1943.
There were never any human casualties during her patrols. However in 2012, after losing her leg and suffering chest burns from the 14kg homemade bomb, she retired.
Lucca’s owner, Gunnery Sergeant Chris Willingham, travelled to London with her to accept the medal.
