Al Mahmud turns 81
Today marks the 81st birth anniversary of eminent poet Al Mahmud, one of the best known Bengali poets in the contemporary period.
Although the occasion is usually celebrated with fanfare and festivity, no public celebration will take place this year because of the Eid holiday weekend.
However, at the poet’s residence at Maghbazar in Dhaka, there will a gathering of his friends, fellow poets and cultural activists led by Bangladesh Nazrul Abritti Parishad and Bangla Katha.
BNAP’s former president and also a noted recitation artiste, Nasim Ahmed said they would gather at the poet’s residence to celebrate the occasion and would pay tribute to the ‘rich legacy that he is leaving behind for our literature.’
Plans to hold public celebrations were called off because of Eid, he added.
Al Mahmud, formally known as Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud, was born on this day in 1936, at the village of Morail in Brahmanbaria. His childhood and secondary education days were spent in this village before he came to Dhaka at the age of 21, looking for work.
