News Desk: A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 has struck northeastern India, close the city of Imphal in the state of Manipur, seismologists say.

The quake occurred at 5:05 a.m. 20 miles west-northwest of Imphal, India, the capital of Manipur state, the USGS said. Preliminary readings on earthquakes often are revised as more data come in.
