2 'robbers' killed in Rangpur 'gunfight'
Rangpur Correspondent:Two alleged robbers were killed in a 'gunfight' with police at Jigatala on Rangpur-Sayedpur highway in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur district early Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Mashiur Rahman, 38, a resident of Bhimpur Darjipara in Taraganj upazila and Bijoy, 32.
Acting on a tip-off that a gang of robbers was preparing to commit robberies in the area, a police team conducted a drive there around 3.20am, said officer-in-charge of Taraganj Police Station Abdul Latif Miah.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on the policemen, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
At one stage, Mashiur and Bijoy were caught in the line of fire and seriously injured while the other members of the gang managed to flee the scene.
The injured were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where doctors declared them dead.
Four policemen were also injured in the gunfight.
Police recovered two pistols, three bullets and several sharp weapons from the scene.
