Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced a plan to plant 25 crore trees across the country over the next five years. He stated that this program will be implemented to combat the effects of climate change, maintain environmental balance, and make the country greener and more livable.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while inaugurating the National Tree Plantation Program in Gournadi, Barishal, on Monday (July 13).

The Prime Minister noted that the number of trees in the country is less than required. Therefore, 25 crore trees will be planted nationwide over the next five years.

He added that due to climate change, rainfall patterns have changed, and there is more rain now than before. In this situation, extensive tree plantation is indispensable for maintaining environmental balance.

Tarique Rahman emphasized that the responsibility does not end with just planting trees; their proper care must also be ensured. Stressing the importance of nurturing every tree to keep the country beautiful and livable, he said, “We must fix our own country ourselves; no one from outside will come and do it for us.”

During the event, the Prime Minister also announced a new slogan for the National Tree Plantation Program: “Adorn the country with tree plantation, Bangladesh comes first.”

The Prime Minister participated in planting 2,500 trees at the program organized in Gournadi.

Earlier in the morning, the Prime Minister arrived in Barishal by road for a day-long visit. According to the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon, as part of the visit, he participated in separate tree plantation programs alongside the newly excavated Sarikal Canal in Batajor Union of Gournadi, at the Trish Godown Killing Field area in Barishal district headquarters, and in the Sagordi area adjacent to Trish Godown.

Additionally, the Prime Minister is scheduled to participate in an exchange of views meeting with leaders of the BNP and its affiliated organizations at the Barishal Shilpakala Academy in the afternoon.
