Customs officials held a man and recovered 31 kilogrammes of gold in separate drives at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Acting on a tip-off, the preventive team of Customs House held Zamil Aktar, 48, a resident of Nilphamari, with 250 pieces of gold bars, weighing around 25 kilogrammes, around 11:30pm last night, said HM Ahsanul Kabir, assistant commissioner of customs.
He came back from Singapore by a Singapore airways flight, SQ 446 around 11:00 pm, he said.
The customs officials detained Zamil while he was passing through green channel at the airport on a wheel chair with the gold bars, worth around Tk 12.5 crore, he added.
In the meantime, the custom personnel also seized six kilogrammes of gold from the toilet of an aircraft in an abandoned condition at the same airport this morning.
Tipped off, the preventive team led a drive in the flight “BS314” of US Bangla Airlines and recovered the six gold bars, weighing 1 kg each, soon after it was landed at the airport around 7:45am, said HM Ahsanul Kabir.
The gold was kept in the toilet three bundles wrapping with black colored tape.
