Online Desk:‘Being healthy’ is associated with the well-being of a person, but not all of us seem to be concerned about the term, unless we become the sufferer of health hazards.

Compared to other countries Bangladeshi people, especially women suffer the most from a number of health concerns. The major complications of women of Bangladesh are associated with obstetric causes, which affects their health in the long run.

This takes place mainly due to leading an unhealthy lifestyle and ignoring the health issues at early age. As a result women at the age of 40 and above become the victims of major non-communicable issues like chronic diseases, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and chronic respiratory diseases are increasing as the population becomes more urbanized. But there is a saying “No compromise to health”. So the people of Bangladesh are getting more cautious about their health. Besides local hospitals, few international hospitals are also facilitating the patients with good care and great hospitality. One such international medical care is “Farrer Park Hospital” in Singapore. According to it, Bangladeshi women above the age of 40 suffer mostly from the four common health concerns and should pay better attention to these. After all, early detection helps patients handle with these issues better. The four common health concerns have been discussed below:

1. Vision Loss

Glaucoma happens when the optic nerve is damaged, resulting in the loss of vision. It happens because there is fluid build-up on the eye which leads to an increased pressure in the eye. It is important to measure intraocular eye pressure regularly.

Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. With cataract occurring in over 80% of people aged 60 and above, it is important to start preventive measures early such as wearing protective sunglasses when outdoors, taking foods that are high in Vitamin E and lutein (such as sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach and other green leafy vegetables.)

Age-related Macular degeneration is another common cause of vision loss in those aged over 50. Apart from family history, risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure and obesity.

2. Heart and blood diseases

Many chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity can lead to heart and blood diseases. To manage these illnesses to prevent them from advancing into stroke and heart problems, it is important to maintain a healthy weight, coupled with annual blood test, screening and making changes to diet and lifestyle.

3. Loss of Bone Mass

As age catches up, women experience menopause because of lower levels of estrogen, which is a vital hormone for bone formation. Osteoporosis in women can occur between the ages of 45 years and 55 years and some of the ways to slow down its development include regular calcium intake of at least 1000mg, healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise and not smoking. Screening for amount of calcium in bones (Bone Mineral Density Test) is recommended in menopausal women.

4. Cancers

Some of the common cancers that can plague older women are those in the breast, cervix and uterus (endometrial). It is because bodily organs and immune system weaken when one gets older. A common symptom is a painless lump felt in the breast. If left undetected and untreated, the painless lump (if malignant) will progress and the chance of cancer survival will be lowered. Hereditary factor and poor diet have a role to play in cancer development.

Useful Tips:

Regular screening is recommended to be in the peak of health. For example monthly breast self-examination, doing a mammogram (annually for women between 40 and 50 years of age, and once every two years for those above 50 years old), pap smear for the cervix and regular blood tests.
