On Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to India, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, said, ‘We do not want to comment on internal politics.’
He stated, ‘We speak of a dream, and our responsibility to realize it increases. As neighboring countries, our responsibility is even greater. We always say, we are equal. Nobody is big, nobody is small.’
He made these remarks on Tuesday (September 1) after a meeting with Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr. Moin Khan and State Minister Mir Shahe Alam at the Secretariat.
Amidst ongoing tension between the two countries concerning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity, Trivedi was asked whether Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would visit India. In response, he said, ‘We do not want to comment on internal politics. Nor should we. Because what the people of the country deem good, what the elected government of the country deems good, that is the truth.’
He further added, ‘We want a people-to-people relationship. We have a responsibility to do what is good for the common people.’
The Indian High Commissioner stated, ‘We speak of a dream, and our responsibility to realize it increases. As neighboring countries, our responsibility is even greater. We always say, we are equal. Nobody is big, nobody is small.’
He also said, ‘We must consider Bangladesh’s democratic challenges, just as Bangladesh must consider India’s challenges. Keeping that in mind, we must move forward. We cannot forget the past, but there is also no scope to remain stuck in it.’
