Prime Minister Tareq Rahman is scheduled to visit the United States on September 21 to attend the United Nations General Assembly session. According to the itinerary, he will depart Dhaka for New York on September 21 and will remain there until September 26.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir confirmed this information while speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday (September 13).
He stated that the Prime Minister, in addition to participating in the UN General Assembly session, will highlight Bangladesh’s new vision and priorities on the global stage. During the visit, he is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with heads of government and state from various countries, as well as attend important sideline meetings.
The State Minister for Foreign Affairs mentioned that these meetings would cover various issues of Bangladesh’s interest. Concurrently, Bangladesh’s position in the international arena and its future priorities will also be presented.
When asked whether Prime Minister Tareq Rahman would meet with US President Donald Trump during his New York visit, Humayun Kabir replied that the primary purpose of the Prime Minister’s trip is to address the UN General Assembly. Beyond this, various sideline meetings will be held, many of which are finalized at the last minute.
He added that Donald Trump has expressed interest in meeting with the Prime Minister. Once it is finalized who the Prime Minister will meet after arriving in the US, the media will be informed.
Meanwhile, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs also stated that special emphasis would be placed on the Rohingya crisis during the visit. He said that the Rohingya issue would be prominently raised in the Prime Minister’s meetings with world leaders. Ensuring a more effective role from the international community for a permanent solution to the crisis will be one of Bangladesh’s key objectives.
