Zimbabwe has set a challenging target of 272 runs for Bangladesh in the first match of the tri-nation series. Despite an early collapse due to Taskin Ahmed’s superb bowling, Zimbabwe recovered thanks to excellent partnerships between Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor. Ultimately, Zimbabwe scored 271 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
On Saturday (October 17), Zimbabwe won the toss in Abu Dhabi and opted to bat first. However, they immediately came under pressure from Bangladesh’s pacer Taskin Ahmed. The team lost 3 wickets for just 24 runs, putting them in a difficult position.
Taskin sent Brian Bennett back to the pavilion in the very first over of the innings. Ben Curran became his second victim in the fifth over. The right-arm pacer then dealt a significant blow to Zimbabwe’s top order by dismissing ODI debutant Tafadzwa Tsiga.
However, experienced batters Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine built a resistance for the fourth wicket. Although they batted cautiously initially, they accelerated the scoring rate as the game progressed. Their 150-run partnership brought Zimbabwe back into the match.
Both batsmen scored brilliant half-centuries. However, despite showing promising signs of reaching a century, neither managed to cross the three-figure mark.
Saif Hassan broke the dangerous partnership by dismissing Taylor, who scored 81 runs off 101 balls. In his very next over, he also sent Zimbabwe’s captain Sikandar Raza back to the pavilion.
Ervine, who continued to fight on the other end, also came close to a century. But his dream of a hundred ended when he was dismissed by Shoriful Islam after scoring 93 runs off 106 balls.
Earlier, leg-spinner Rishad Hossain claimed a wicket by dismissing Wesley Madhevere. Later, Shoriful accounted for Brad Evans.
Despite forming significant partnerships in the middle overs, Zimbabwe’s scoring rate slowed down in the latter stages due to Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling. However, late aggressive batting from Newman Nyamhuri and Wellington Masakadza pushed their total past 250. Both remained unbeaten on 21 runs each.
Among Bangladesh’s bowlers, Taskin Ahmed was the most successful, claiming 3 wickets for 44 runs. Shoriful Islam and Saif Hassan took 2 wickets each, while Rishad Hossain picked up 1 wicket.
Thus, to start their campaign in the tri-nation series with a victory, Bangladesh needs to score 272 runs in 50 overs.
