Bangladesh government has expressed deep concern and protested over the injuries of Bangladeshi nationals in the cross-border shelling by summoning Kyaw Soe Moe, Myanmar’s ambassador to Dhaka, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On Tuesday (January 13), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Myanmar ambassador and expressed strong protest over the incident of 9-year-old Huzaifa Afnan being injured in the firing from the Myanmar side at Teknaf border.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ambassador was reminded during the summons that the unprovoked firing on the territory of Bangladesh is a clear violation of international law and is against the good neighborly relations between the two countries.
Bangladesh government called on Myanmar and said that they should take full responsibility and take effective measures so that such cross-border shootings do not happen again in the future. At the same time, Bangladesh has made it clear that any conflict between the Myanmar authorities and the armed groups there will not affect the lives and livelihood of the common people of Bangladesh in any way.
Ambassador Kyaw Swee Mo assured that the Myanmar government will take necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. He also expressed his sincere condolences to the injured child and his family.
Notably, at around 9 am on Sunday (January 11), Huzaifa Afnan, a child of Techi Bridge border area of Hoikung Union of Teknaf, was seriously injured by firing from Myanmar’s Rakhine state near the Bangladesh border. Later around 6 pm he was admitted to ICU of Chittagong Medical College Hospital. According to the doctors, the bullet remained in the child’s brain and a part of the skull was opened to reduce the pressure on the brain.
