Mushfiqur happy with triple role

13 Feb, 2017 19:42:20

Sports Correspondent:Bangladesh Test skipper Mushfiqur Rahim defended the shots that some of the batsmen played in the second innings against India by saying that only defending creates more pressure on the batsmen.

The 29-year-old, who got himself out for 27 trying a lofted shot off Ravichandran Ashwin after lunch today, also said that he was comfortable with the three jobs -- captaincy, wicketkeeping and batting -- that he was doing, and it is only up to the team management to decide whether he should give up captaincy or keeping.

“You can never win by defending or draw by defending,” the centurion of the first innings said in press conference at the end of the one-off Test which Bangladesh lost by 208 runs.

“At the end of the day you have to score runs. If a bowler knows that if this batsman will just defend, then it becomes difficult. We lost wickets in the wrong time, because we knew that the first few wickets were important. We wanted to lose as less wickets as possible,” the skipper added.

“If you are doing two or three jobs maybe the board or management have trust in you. I need to deliver what I am doing, in all the three departments and if I didn’t do well then they can make the decision but at the moment I am doing well. Captaincy is not in my hands; it’s the board’s decision so they can analyse the whole thing,” Mushfiqur said when asked to evaluate his performance both as a captain and a wicketkeeper.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli said that he expected the fight that Bangladesh showed given the team’s recent batting form and the fact that the wicket didn’t deteriorate much on the fifth day.

“It was good wicket to bat on; if you just play basic cricket you can score runs on this wicket,” the India skipper said.
