Mount Everest Glacier Melting Due to Mountaineers’ Urine: Study

Around 2,500 tons of ice and snow are melting annually at Mount Everest’s Base Camp due to the heat generated by fuel consumption and direct disposal of human urine on the ice. This alarming information regarding the Himalayan environment has emerged from a joint study by international researchers.

Recently, The Independent reported on this, citing the findings of the study published in the environmental research paper ‘Regional Environmental Change’.

The research focused on the Base Camp established on Everest’s renowned Khumbu Glacier, located in the Nepalese part of the mountain. Every spring, with the arrival of mountaineers, guides, and support staff, this secluded icy terrain transforms into a temporary tourist hub. The provision of modern amenities like internet, hot showers, heated tents, and cafeterias creates additional environmental pressure on the glacier.

The study states that during the 50-day spring season of 2023, approximately 1,600 tents at the Base Camp consumed 824 canisters of LPG, 18,935 liters of kerosene, and 5,130 liters of petrol to meet their fuel demands.

The use of these fuels for cooking, heating tents, and generating electricity produces a significant amount of heat. Added to this is the heat radiated from human bodily waste. In total, approximately 849,174 megajoules of energy were generated, enough to melt an estimated 2,492 tons of ice. Considering the uncertainties in the study’s calculations, the amount of ice melted could range between 1,964 and 3,020 tons.

According to the researchers, this amount of melted water could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool, 83 oil tankers, or approximately 16,700 standard bathtubs.

The study also revealed that the heat from human urine plays a significant role in ice melt. To avoid altitude-induced dehydration, mountaineers and guides consume large quantities of water. Consequently, an average of approximately 6,000 liters of urine is produced daily, which is often disposed of directly onto the glacier. Researchers estimate that the heat from this urine alone could melt around 154 tons of ice in one season.

Analyzing satellite imagery from 1991 to 2023, researchers also found an alarming trend. It showed that the surface temperature in the Everest Base Camp area is increasing by an average of 0.28 degrees Celsius annually, which is almost double the rate of temperature increase of the surrounding Khumbu Glacier.

The study, led by Kim Lal Gautam, a senior surveyor from Nepal’s Department of Land Management, suggests that if the effects of helicopter flights, body heat from porters and yaks, and human body temperature were also factored in, the true extent of environmental damage at Base Camp could be even greater.

Scientists state that global climate change is the primary cause of Everest’s ice melt. However, the annual gathering of thousands of people on a rapidly warming and shrinking sensitive glacier is exacerbating the situation.

To mitigate long-term climatic and environmental damage, experts have recommended relocating the Everest Base Camp from the glacier to a nearby permanent and relatively safer location.
