‘New CEC more loyal to AL than predecessor’
Staff Correspondent:BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday said chief election commissioner-designate KM Nurul Huda is much ahead with the spirit of ruling Awami League than Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, the outgoing chief election commissioner.
‘He (Nurul Huda) is a ‘committed Awami Leaguer’ which was disclosed by his speeches soon after he was announced as chief election commissioner, and through his past activities,’ said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He was speaking at a press conference at the party’s central office at Nayapaltan in Dhaka.
‘If the elections are held by the new CEC, those will be partial ones and remain voterless which will make longer the prevailing misrule,’ Rizvi added.
‘The nation will welcome him (Nurul Huda) if he steps down from the constitutional post respecting the people’s desire,’ the BNP leader said.
Former bureaucrat KM Nurul Huda was appointed as the next chief election commissioner on February 6.
The president, Abdul Hamid, also appointed former bureaucrats Mahbub Talukder and M Rafiqul Islam, former district judge Kabita Khanam, and retired brigadier general Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury as election commissioners.
In another context, Rizvi made comments over the speech of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, who on Thursday warned that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party might become irrelevant in politics if it repeated the mistake by boycotting the next polls as it did in the 10th parliamentary elections.
‘On behalf of BNP, I want to say AL general secretary that tell your prime minister to hold the polls by forming a neutral government leaving her power,’ he said.
‘And then we will come to know which party will be irrelevant in politics.’
