OC of Sonagazi Moazzem held in capital

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested former officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonagazi Police Station Moazzem Hossain in the capital today.

A team of DMP arrested Moazzem from the High Court area this afternoon and later on, he was taken to Shahbagh Police Station for questioning, Maruf Hossain Sardar, deputy commissioner of DMP (Ramna division), told BSS.

Moazzem was arrested 20 days after a tribunal issued an arrest warrant for him on May 27 in a case filed under the Digital Security Act for allegedly circulating a video clip of the statement of Feni Madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

On April 15, the case was filed for allegedly recording the statement of Nusrat, a victim of sexual harassment, without her consent and circulating the footage on social media.

According to the case statement, Nusrat went to Sonagazi Model Police Station to file a case against Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa Principal Sirajuddaula on March 27 for sexually assaulting her the day before.

But, Moazzem recorded a video of her statement without her consent and asked her offensive and insulting questions. The video then surfaced on various social media platforms. It was alleged that Moazzem had uploaded the video on social media.

Nusrat, 18, an Alim examinee, was set on fire by Sirajuddaulas followers on April 6 for refusing to withdraw the rape attempt case which she filed against the madrasa principal.

She died from her burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10.

On the same day, the OC was withdrawn as Nusrats family alleged that he was not cooperating with them.

On May 8, Moazzem was suspended over the negligence of duty and attached to the office of DIG (Rangpur Range).
