Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced that initiatives are being taken to increase LNG import and supply to address the country’s fuel crisis.
He revealed this information in his speech delivered at the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) on Wednesday, September 2.
The Prime Minister stated that discussions are underway with an interested firm regarding the establishment of a floating LNG terminal in the Kutubdia area, deep offshore Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar. He expressed hope that LNG supply through this proposed terminal would be possible by December 2028.
He informed that if this initiative is implemented, LNG imports into the country will significantly increase within the next two years. This is expected to improve the country’s fuel supply situation.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister also mentioned that work is underway on proposals for the urgent establishment of two more floating LNG terminals in the Payra and Mongla port areas to meet the fuel demand of the country’s southwestern region.
He said these initiatives to establish terminals have been undertaken considering the fuel demand of the southwestern region. It is expected that the establishment of these proposed floating LNG terminals will improve the overall fuel supply situation of the country, and significantly alleviate the gas crisis.
