Prime Minister Tareq Rahman has instructed the rapid implementation of ‘Automatic Traffic Light Systems’ at at least 50 more key intersections in Dhaka to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure modern traffic management in the capital.
He issued this directive during a high-level meeting on environmental pollution held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday (July 18).
During the meeting, the Prime Minister also emphasized taking effective measures for the swift removal of unfit, expired, and highly polluting vehicles from the capital’s roads. He instructed the relevant authorities to take strict action in this regard.
Detailed discussions were also held on measures to control air and noise pollution. The Prime Minister specifically stressed taking rapid and effective steps to reduce air pollution caused by brick kilns and expanding brick production through eco-friendly alternative technologies.
The issue of excessive horn usage by vehicles in the capital also received significant attention during the meeting. He instructed law enforcement agencies to be stricter in controlling the misuse of horns. Simultaneously, he directed an assessment of the potential for using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, similar to AI cameras used in traffic management, for horn control.
Attendees at the meeting included Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintu, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, and Dr. Saimum Parvez, the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.
Also present were Md. Abdus Salam, Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation; Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan, Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation; Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP); Md. Anisur Rahman, Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic); and senior officials from various ministries and agencies.
