Law and Justice Minister Md. Asaduzzaman has announced that online stored information will be progressively linked with the central servers of National Identity Cards (NID), birth registration, and passports to prevent second marriages through the concealment of information. This integration, he stated, will enable online verification of an individual’s previous marital status before remarriage.
Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman revealed this information on Saturday (October 3) at the inaugural ceremony of a 10-day residential training program for Nikah Registrars (Kazi) held at the BRAC Learning Center in Niketan, Dhaka. Under this training program, Nikah Registrars are being trained on the online registration process and software usage.
The Law Minister stated that all Nikah Registrars across the country would be progressively brought under a digital registration system, for which necessary training would be provided.
He informed that if marriage and divorce information is stored online, it would be possible to verify if someone attempts to marry elsewhere by concealing details of a previous marriage. This will also aid in preventing child marriage and polygamy.
He added that in the future, even if multiple claims arise from wives or children after a person’s death, the authenticity of marital relationships can be verified using registered information. This could reduce the tendency for lawsuits arising from inheritance or marital disputes, thereby lessening the burden on the state.
During the event, the Law Minister also discussed increasing administrative transparency and accountability within the Law and Justice Division. He announced that a lottery-based appointment process would soon be introduced to dismantle the long-standing influence and syndicate among sub-registrars in Dhaka.
