Security has been heightened in Dhaka’s diplomatic zone following email threats and demands for extortion sent to various embassies and government offices in the capital. Embassies in Gulshan and Baridhara, in particular, have been brought under special surveillance.

In addition to uniformed police, plainclothes law enforcement personnel have been deployed in front of critical establishments and embassies within the diplomatic area. Checkpoints and patrols have been increased. Simultaneously, Quick Response Teams (QRTs) have been kept ready to tackle any emergency situation.

Abu Khayer, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the DMP’s Diplomatic Security Division, confirmed the matter.

He stated that security in the diplomatic area has been increased compared to before, especially concerning the threats and extortion demands. Surveillance at checkpoints, patrols, and in front of embassies has been intensified. Additionally, Quick Response Teams have been kept prepared.

Recently, several foreign embassies and government offices in Dhaka received threats via email. It is understood that a particular group issued these threats.

Following the incidents, representatives from the concerned embassies held a meeting with officials from the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

With the threats coming to light, the CTTC has launched an investigation to uncover their source and motive. Concurrently, the security situation in the diplomatic area is being closely monitored.
