The counter terrorism police on Saturday said they have held four people, including one of the suspected masterminds of Holey Artisan Bakery attack at Gulshan in Dhaka.
The suspected militant of banned outfit “Neo JMB”, who was arrested in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj early today, is one of the planners of Gulshan café attack, police said.
Arrestee Shohel Mahfuz also supplied explosives to the café attackers, Monirul Islam, chief of the DMP's Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, told the reporters.
Mahfuz is one of the five most wanted “militants” in a case Holey Artisan Bakery militant attack last year, the CTTC chief said.
Four other wanted people are Mizanur Rahman alias Chhoto Mizan, Hadisur Rahman Sagar alias Joypurhat Sagor, Basharuzzan Chocolate and Rashed Alias Rash, he added.
Mahfuz along with three other “Neo JMB” members -- Jamal, Hafiz and Jewel -- were arrested from a house in Kanshat area around 2:40am today, said Abdul Mannan, additional deputy commissioner of CTTC who led by a law enforcers’ team while conducting the drive.
Deputy commissioner Muhibul Islam Khan of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit said they were arrested at Kansat in Chapainawabganj on Friday night.
The suspected mastermind was identified as Sohel Mahfuz, a top leader of a faction of banned extremist outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh.
Police could not provide the identities of three others immediately.
All of them were being taken to Dhaka, he added.
The extremist attack on the Gulshan cafe left 29 people, including 17 foreigners, two police officials and five suspects, killed on July 1 and 2 in 2016.
