BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that Tariq Rahman will hold the post of BNP Chairman in a day or two.
He said this while interacting with journalists at a hotel in Sylhet on Sunday (January 4).
Mirza Fakhrul said, the post is vacant due to the death of our chairperson. Tariq Rahman will be appointed to this position to fill that vacancy.
BNP Secretary General said, BNP will start election campaign from Sylhet as always.
He said that the upcoming elections are important for the nation because people were deprived of their right to vote. BNP as a party does not feel apprehensive even though the media talks about the fear of the election. BNP has wanted elections since the beginning.
After returning to the country last December 25, Tarek Rahman became a voter of Dhaka-17 seat last Saturday.
On the other hand, Bogra District BNP President Rezaul Karim, District BNP Former President Saiful Islam, District BNP Acting General Secretary Mosharraf Hossain, District BNP Former General Secretary Ali Azgar Talukder and Bogra Town BNP President Hamidul Haque Chowdhury submitted nomination papers on behalf of Tariq Rahman in Bogra-6 seat.
According to party sources, Bogra-6 seat was held by BNP in all the parliamentary elections held from 1991 to 2008. During this time, the late chairperson of BNP, Khaleda Zia, was elected Member of Parliament from this constituency four times.
During the post-11 caretaker government, in 2008, the country’s first ever photo electoral roll was produced. On September 11 that year, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s eldest son Tarek Rahman was released from prison and left Bangladesh for London. He could not be included in the voter list as he was staying abroad. Later, even during the Awami League government, he did not return to the country and was not registered as a voter.
An interim government was formed when the Awami League was ousted by a July coup last year. Then on December 11, the Election Commission announced the schedule of the Thirteenth National Parliament Elections. According to the announced schedule, polling will be held on February 12.
