The judiciary should always be free from political influence :CJ

Chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Saturday said that the judiciary should always be free from political influence and impact.

The chief justice also requested the government to make a law for fixing the number of judges at the Appellate Division and the High Court Division to decrease political influence in the judiciary.

He made the call at a function of Bangladesh Women Judges’ Association in the city in to honour the country’s first women judge and the association’s founding president, Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, who retired on July 9, for her life-time achievement.

Law minister Anisul Huq, the all the six Appellate Division judges, six women High Court judges and members of the association, among others, were present in the function.

The chief justice said that every political government after assuming their offices appoint Supreme Court judges at their wills as there is no boundary on the number of judges to be appointed at the High Court and the Appellate Division.

He said that such practice was inappropriate as political influence-free judiciary is better.

The chief justice said that once there were 11 judges at the Appellate Division, now the number stood at six.

The judges of the Appellate Division would be stood at four when the chief justice will retire in January 18, and Justice MA Wahhab Miah will retire after the chief justice.
