At least 42 students of Jahangirnagar University, who were picked up while protesting a road crash that left two of their fellows dead on Friday, have been sent to jail in a vandalism case filed against them.
JU Registrar Abu Bakkar filed the case with Ashulia Police Station this morning against at least 50 people mentioning names of 30 accused, brining allegation that the students have carried out vandalism on the campus during the agitation.
The students will be brought before a Dhaka today, Mohsinul Qader, officer-in-charge of the police station, told the reporters.
In the meantime, JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam assured the students to open the halls soon, Jewel Rana, president of JU Bangladesh Chhatra League unit, told reporters while they under the banner of general students met with the VC around 11:00am.
The authorities last night in an emergency syndicate meeting took a decision and asked the students to vacate their halls by around 10:00am on Sunday.
The decision to vacate the halls came after the students laid siege to the JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam’s residence demanding punishment for the BCL men who earlier attacked them while they were staging demonstration against deaths of two fellows in Friday's road accident blocking the Dhaka-Aricha highway.
