The new minimum wage for readymade garment workers will be determined by the end of this December. Workers will receive the new wage with their January salary. This decision was made at the first meeting of the Minimum Wage Board on Wednesday (November 4).
The meeting, held at the Board’s office in Segunbagicha, the capital, discussed the determination of a new wage structure for garment workers. According to the decision, the aim is to finalize wage determination by December and implement the new structure from January.
Currently, the minimum wage for readymade garment workers is BDT 12,500. This wage was determined in November 2023 and became effective from December of that year. This time, a section of workers has been demanding a monthly minimum wage of BDT 30,000.
Recently, protests, road blockades, and clashes involving workers have occurred in industrial areas of Gazipur, Savar-Ashulia, and various parts of Dhaka, all demanding wage increases. In such a situation, the Board’s decision regarding the timeframe for determining the new wage has created anticipation among workers.
