Cabinet approves 10 year jail, Tk 10 cr fine for sabotage in power sector

The cabinet in weekly meeting on Monday approved the draft Electricity Bill 2017 incorporating provision that stipulates maximum 10-year imprisonment and a fine of Tk 10 crore for committing sabotage in any establishment in power sector.

There was no inclusion of punishment in Electricity Act, 1910 for committing sabotage. The punishment for sabotage has been incorporated in the draft bill, said cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam.

He was speaking to reporters at a briefing after the weekly cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair at the secretariat.

The draft bill enrolled minimum punishment of seven years’ jail for committing sabotage, he added.
