ICT to submit formal charges against Pak army

Online Desk:The International Crimes Tribunal -1 on Wednesday set May 31 to submit formal charges against Pakistan occupation armys Bengali captain Muhammad Shahidullah.

The three-member tribunal conducted by Justice Anwarul Haque set the date responding to a petition filed by prosecutor Abul Kalam seeking three-month time to submit the charges.

He informed the court that the prosecution had already received the probe report from the War Crimes Investigation Agency.

The prosecution needed three-month time to prepare the formal charges after scrutinising the probe report, he said.

The WCIA said on Tuesday that it found evidence that former Pakistan army captain Muhammad Shahidullah was involved in war crimes in 1971.

Shahidullah, 75, of Golaperchar, Daudkandi, Comilla, is in jail custody.

Evidence has been found that he participated in three incidents of crimes against humanity that were committed between June 7, 1971 and July 21, 1971 at different places under the then Daudkandi thana, WCIA chief Mohammad Abdul Hannan Khan told a news briefing at the agencys Dhanmondi office in Dhaka.

Only days before the Liberation War began, he said, captain Shahidullah came to his village from the then West Pakistan and immediately after the war began he joined the Pakistani occupation army at Dhaka cantonment.

Later, Shahidullah was posted at Comilla cantonment.

Shahidullah set up a camp of the occupation army at Daudkandi from where he committed murders, arson attacks, looting, abductions, confinement and torture in confinement, he said.

War crimes investigator ZM Altafur Rahman probed the charges against Shahidullah from October 11, 2015 to March 21, 2017, he said.
