Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed commented that the nation is saddened by the death of Ishayat Shahriar Opratim, a child from Cumilla. He stated that the accused were arrested within 12 hours of the incident and the legal process is now underway. Police will assist in the swift trial of Opratim’s murder, similar to the Ramisha murder case.
The Home Minister made these remarks during a briefing on the law and order situation at the Secretariat on Sunday (September 20).
Salahuddin Ahmed said that Opratim used to associate and spend time with members of a juvenile crime gang. They were five to ten years older than Opratim. Opratim’s iPhone was recovered from the prime suspect, Tuhin. He also informed that Tuhin has confessed to the murder.
The Home Minister said, “The accused were arrested within 12 hours. Police have been able to seize evidence and other related items. Police will cooperate in the trial of Cumilla’s Opratim murder, just like the Ramisha murder.”
Opratim, son of Dr. Nahida Begum, Associate Professor of Bengali Department at Cumilla University, went missing on Friday afternoon after leaving his home in the Kotbari area. His body was recovered the next day, Saturday, from an isolated area near Lalmai Hill in Cumilla.
Police stated that Opratim had injury marks on his head. His mother’s iPhone, which was with him when he went missing, was not found with the body. The phone was later recovered from the prime suspect, Tuhin.
Several individuals have been detained and interrogated in connection with the incident. Police stated that the investigation into the murder and the legal process are ongoing.
