Powerful Earthquake Shakes Russia Again

A powerful earthquake has struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The earthquake measured 7 on the Richter scale.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the earthquake’s epicentre was approximately 123 kilometres southwest of the far eastern Russian city of Vilyuchinsk, at a depth of 140 kilometres.

The earthquake struck around 3:35 PM local time.

No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. The US National Tsunami Warning Center stated that there was no risk from this tremor.

No immediate details were available regarding any damage or casualties caused by the earthquake.

According to BNO News, Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) had mistakenly issued an advance warning for a 9.9 magnitude earthquake, forecasting intense shaking across a large part of Japan, even though their own measurement indicated the earthquake’s magnitude was 6.9.

Had this warning been accurate, it would have been the most powerful earthquake ever recorded.

The Kamchatka Peninsula is situated on the ‘Ring of Fire,’ a tectonic belt that stretches across much of the Pacific Ocean and is a seismically active region.

Last July, a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of this region, causing a tsunami that submerged parts of a coastal village.
