Another 53 people withdrew their candidature on the fourth day of the hearing of the appeal filed against the decision of the returning officers in the Thirteenth National Assembly elections. 15 appeals have been rejected by the Election Commission (EC).

Today Tuesday (January 13) 70 appeals were heard in the auditorium of the election building in Agargaon in the capital from 10 am to 4 pm. Among these, two appeals were filed against the declaration of validity of the nomination of the Returning Officer. The commission rejected those two appeals.

This appeal hearing process will continue till January 18.

According to the schedule announced by the Commission, hearing of appeals serial number 211 to 280 was held today. The full commission will take up the hearing under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasiruddin.

EC Secretariat Director (Public Relations) Md. Ruhul Amin Mallick said, Wednesday (January 14) 281 to 350, Thursday (January 15) 351 to 420, Friday (January 16) 421 to 490 will be heard.

Earlier yesterday, Monday (January 12), 41 candidates withdrew their candidature on the third day of hearing.

EC Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that a total of 71 appeals were heard on the third day. Of these, 41 appeals were allowed and 25 were rejected. Besides, four appeals are pending and one appeal of Pabna-II seat has not been heard.

EC officials said that a total of 150 candidates got their candidatures back after hearing the appeals in the last three days. Out of this, 51 candidates got their candidature back on the first day (52 were granted but 1 was against appeal), 58 on the second day and 41 on the third day.

A total of 645 appeals have been submitted to the Election Commission against the decision to cancel and accept nomination papers in this election. Returning officials announced cancellation of nomination papers of 723 people after verification on January 4.
