The death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has cast a shadow of mourning on the sports arena of the country. Apart from the country’s top sports organizations including BCB and BAFUF, national team cricketers Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and other sports stars have expressed grief and condolences. National team captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza expressed his condolences.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday (December 30), Mashrafe wrote, “I mourn the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.” Deepest condolences to his bereaved family, relatives and well-wishers at this difficult time.’
Recalling Khaleda Zia’s political contribution, Mashrafe further wrote, ‘People of the country will remember her contribution in the long struggle in the path of politics. May his departed soul rest in peace. Surely Allah will give a good reward.’
Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on Tuesday (December 30) around 6 am while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. His condition worsened after he was admitted to the hospital on November 23 with breathing problems due to a lung infection. Later, along with pneumonia, complications due to kidney, liver, arthritis and diabetes appeared. He was taken to ICU when his condition deteriorated. But in the end, all the efforts of the doctors failed.
