Bangladesh is currently reviewing a proposal to construct a 683-megawatt hydropower plant jointly with Nepal, according to Iqbal Hassan Mahmud, Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.

He made this statement in response to a starred question tabled by Fahima Nasrin, a ruling party member from a reserved women’s seat, in Parliament on Monday (June 22).

The Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister elaborated that the joint construction of this 683 MW hydropower plant is under consideration with the objective of importing more hydropower from Nepal.

He further informed that Bangladesh is currently importing 40 megawatts of hydropower from Nepal as part of ongoing energy cooperation.

Hasan Mahmud added that if any legal framework or measures are required in the future concerning the regional hydropower sector, the necessary steps would be taken accordingly.
