Prime Minister Tareque Rahman will simultaneously inaugurate a tree plantation program in over 29,000 secondary-level educational institutions across the country. The program’s official inauguration will take place on Monday (June 29) from the Bangladesh-China Friendship International Conference Center in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Education, this initiative has been undertaken to implement the government’s electoral pledge of planting 250 million saplings in five years and to involve students in tree plantation under the ‘One Child, One Tree’ program. As part of this, the Ministry of Education plans to plant 50 million trees in schools, colleges, and madrasas nationwide over the next five years.
The press release states that from the main event, the Prime Minister will simultaneously inaugurate the program at 2 PM in 29,621 secondary-level educational institutions across the country. These institutions include 18,907 schools, 1,446 school-and-colleges, and 9,268 madrasas.
The Ministry of Education informed that although the program was scheduled to be held at 10 AM, the time has been changed to 2 PM due to special reasons.
Under the program, each educational institution is being provided with a special grant of BDT 5,000 annually to enhance climate awareness. This year, each institution will plant one fruit tree, one forest tree, and one medicinal plant.
Meanwhile, arrangements have been made for the inauguration ceremony to be broadcast live on large screens in all participating educational institutions across the country. The Ministry of Education stated that ministers, state ministers, deputy ministers, Members of Parliament, local public representatives, dignitaries, teachers, students, and guardians from the respective areas will be present at the event and participate in the tree plantation activities.
