An 18-year-old newlywed bride was allegedly gang-raped on her wedding night in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha. Following the incident, she was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Police have detained seven people, including her husband Asif Mia, in connection with the case.
Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam of Saghata Police Station confirmed the matter on Saturday night. The incident reportedly took place on Thursday night at Osmanpara village in Kamalpur union of Saghata.
Dr. Fahad Al Asad, Residential Medical Officer of Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, said the survivor was brought to the hospital around 2 p.m. on Friday, accompanied by two other women. She received primary treatment there, but as her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. “The medical examination found evidence of rape and physical assault,” he added.
According to local sources, the bride is the daughter of Nazim Uddin from Bhaggorib village in Kochashahar union under Gobindaganj. She was married to the son of Ashadul Islam from Osmanpara village in Saghata. The marriage took place on Wednesday with a dowry settlement of Tk 2.3 lakh. After the ceremony, her husband Asif Mia brought her to his home, where the incident allegedly occurred on Thursday night.
Saiful Islam, a local resident (45), said: “The bride was sent off late Wednesday night. On Thursday night, she was gang-raped. By Friday noon, as her condition worsened, she was taken to the hospital.”
Confirming the arrests, SI Aminul Islam said: “Seven people, including the husband, have been detained for primary interrogation. An investigation is underway to determine the actual incident. Legal action is being processed against the detainees.”
