At least 60 students of Chittagong University (CU) were injured in clashes with locals near the university’s Gate No. 2 area. Among them, 21 students with serious injuries were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. In the wake of the incident, the university administration has postponed all examinations scheduled for Sunday (August 31).

Speaking on Sunday morning, CU Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin said: “Many students were injured in the attack carried out by locals. Some of them were supposed to take part in today’s exams. That is why all examinations have been suspended.”

The clashes broke out around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday (August 30) when a female student tried to enter her flat and was allegedly assaulted by the building’s security guard. As nearby students rushed to help, the guard fled. Shortly after, locals began throwing bricks and stones at the students, sparking violent clashes.

Witnesses alleged that announcements were made from a local mosque loudspeaker, calling more residents to join the attack. From midnight onwards, the confrontation escalated, leaving dozens of students injured, many of them hacked and severely wounded.

Dr. Muhammad Tipu Sultan of CU Medical Center said: “A large number of injured students were brought in for treatment. We provided primary care, and those in critical condition were referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.”

Tensions have been running high across the CU campus since the incident. Additional police forces have been deployed to bring the situation under control.
