The full verdict of the High Court has been published, instructing Grameen Kalyan, owned by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, former chief advisor of the caretaker government, to pay the BDT 666 crore tax demanded by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

The 15-page verdict was published on the Supreme Court’s website on Monday (October 12).

The verdict instructs Grameen Kalyan to pay the amount promptly. Earlier, on September 10, a High Court bench led by Justice Md. Mozibur Rahman Miah had announced this verdict. At that time, it was instructed to pay the amount within the next three fiscal years.

Following a re-evaluation, the NBR demanded tax from Grameen Kalyan for the tax years 2012-13 to 2016-17. In 2017, the organization filed two separate writ petitions challenging the validity of this claim. After initial hearings, the court issued a rule. However, a new High Court bench later dismissed the rule. This paved the way for the NBR to collect the demanded funds.

Previously, on October 4, a High Court bench suo motu withdrew a related verdict. The bench of Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar Md. Rashed Jahangir sent the case file to the Chief Justice after withdrawing the verdict. Subsequently, the case was transferred to a new bench.
