The High Court has delivered its verdict on the appeal in the widely discussed murder case of Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a madrasa student from Sonagazi, Feni. The verdict upheld the death sentences for two convicts. Additionally, four individuals received life imprisonment, while ten accused were acquitted.
On Monday (August 24), from 12:50 PM, the High Court bench, consisting of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice K.M. Rasheduzzaman Raja, announced the verdict in this high-profile case.
During the pronouncement of the verdict, Advocate S.M. Shahjahan, Barrister Masud Hossain Dolon, and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented the accused in court.
On April 6, 2019, Nusrat was tied up on the rooftop of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil Madrasa, doused with kerosene, and set on fire. She died on April 10 while undergoing treatment in Dhaka for her severe burns.
In the case filed regarding this incident, on October 24, 2019, the Feni Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced 16 accused, including Siraj Ud Doula, the then principal of the madrasa, to death.
Subsequently, the accused filed appeals and jail appeals against that verdict. Concurrently, a death reference was sent to the High Court for the approval of the death sentences. After a lengthy hearing, the High Court delivered its verdict on the appeals on Monday.
In the verdict, among the 16 accused, the death sentences for two and life imprisonment for four were upheld, and ten individuals were acquitted.
