Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has stated that the government is working to ensure safe and sustainable housing for all citizens. He mentioned that ensuring safe housing for everyone is more challenging in developing countries like Bangladesh compared to developed nations. However, the government is emphasizing sustainable urbanization alongside universal housing.

The Prime Minister made these remarks on Monday (October 5) at a discussion meeting organized at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital, marking World Habitat Day.

The Prime Minister stated that it is crucial to ensure safe, quality, and affordable housing for all people in urban areas, alongside developing eco-friendly and planned cities. The government is implementing various initiatives to ensure universal housing and sustainable urbanization.

He said that the government is working on various potential plans to reduce the pressure of increasing population in cities. Alongside making communication systems between the capital Dhaka and other cities faster, more affordable, and safer, emphasis is also being placed on increasing civic amenities for people in rural areas.

According to the Prime Minister, enhancing civic amenities in rural areas will create an effective alternative to reduce the pressure of people migrating to cities. Simultaneously, emphasis is being placed on bringing every region of the country, even those outside major cities, into the mainstream of national development.

To this end, the Prime Minister also announced that initiatives are being taken to develop a secondary township around the capital, Dhaka.

The main event of World Habitat Day, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, began on Monday morning. Prior to the discussion meeting, the Prime Minister planted a Golden Champa sapling in the premises of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.

At that time, Minister of Housing and Public Works Zakaria Taher Sumon, State Minister Ahmed Sohel Manjur, Secretary of the Ministry Md. Obaidur Rahman, and other relevant senior officials were present.
