The US military operation on Venezuelan soil and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro’s wife have caused extreme tension in international politics. Russia strongly condemned the unprecedented move, calling it an ‘armed aggression’.
According to a statement from the Kremlin, this behavior of Washington is not only unacceptable, but it is a gross violation of international law. Moscow feels that ideological hostility is now taking precedence over pragmatic diplomacy, which is extremely dangerous.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said Latin America had been declared a ‘zone of peace’ in 2014, but the US attack had shattered that peace. According to Russia, the people of Venezuela should have the right to determine their own destiny without destructive outside interference. They expressed full solidarity with the Bolivarian leadership in defending the sovereignty of Venezuela and stressed the importance of dialogue to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto said Washington carried out a major attack on civilian and military installations in Caracas. A state of emergency has been declared across the country due to the current volatile situation. The Russian Embassy in Caracas is currently operating as normal and is in constant communication with the Venezuelan authorities. Moscow has made it clear that dialogue, not conflict, can be the only way to solve any problem.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the US has conducted large-scale airstrikes in Venezuela. According to his claim, US special forces have captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and taken them out of the country. Russia has expressed concern over the claim and warned that such a military intervention would create long-term instability in the entire region.
