Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife have been detained by the US military in a special operation directed by US President Donald Trump. A few months before this incident, he directly challenged Trump and said that the US President can arrest him from the Presidential Palace in Caracas if he wants to.

Last August, the U.S. announced an increase in the reward for help in Maduro’s arrest. In a heated speech in response, Maduro said, ‘Come, get me. I will wait for him (Trump) right here in Miraflores. Don’t delay, coward.’

The White House mocked Maduro in a video posted on social media on Sunday (January 4). The video combines Maduro’s sarcastic remarks against the United States with footage of the operation to capture the Venezuelan president and his wife, Celia Flores.

The 61-second clip also included part of Donald Trump’s press briefing on the attack on Venezuela. There, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was heard saying that Maduro ‘once had a chance, but it was missed.’

Hegseth can also be heard saying in the video that Maduro ‘took a huge risk without thinking about the consequences, and (now) he is suffering the consequences’. The video instantly went viral on social media.

Saturday (January 3) in the early hours of the morning (local time) in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, US special forces conducted a surprise operation. Meanwhile, Maduro and his wife were sleeping in their residence in the Fort Tiuna military complex in Caracas, covered by security blankets. According to various media reports, it took about 30 minutes for the forces to arrest the Venezuelan president.
