Online Tax Return Bangladesh – NBR Mandates E-Filing for All Except Four Groups

Online Tax Return Bangladesh becomes mandatory for most taxpayers under a new directive from the National Board of Revenue (NBR). Consequently, this digital shift aims to streamline tax compliance and improve the overall efficiency of the filing process starting from the 2025–2026 assessment year.

On Sunday, August 3, NBR Chairman Md. Abu Hena Md. Rahmatul Muneem signed an official order introducing this requirement. According to the order, the new rule falls under Section 328(4) of the Income Tax Act, 2023. Therefore, beginning on July 4, 2025, nearly all individual taxpayers must submit their returns online.

Exemptions: Who Can Still File on Paper?

While the rule applies broadly, NBR has exempted four specific groups from mandatory online filing:

  • Senior citizens aged 65 or older.
  • Physically disabled or special needs taxpayers (with official certification).
  • Bangladeshi taxpayers currently residing abroad.
  • Legal representatives of deceased taxpayers.

Importantly, these exempted taxpayers may still choose to file online if they prefer. To facilitate this, NBR has provided access to the official e-return system via its website: Visit NBR e-Return Portal.

What If You Can’t File Online?

Some taxpayers might face technical difficulties while registering or using the e-return system. In such cases, they must apply in writing to the Deputy Tax Commissioner by October 31, 2025. After reviewing the application, an Additional or Joint Tax Commissioner may allow them to file a paper return. However, NBR encourages all eligible taxpayers to utilize the online platform for faster processing and better record-keeping.

Why Is NBR Enforcing Digital Filing?

By mandating e-filing, NBR seeks to modernize tax administration in Bangladesh. Furthermore, this initiative improves transparency, reduces paperwork, and ensures faster resolution of tax matters. Taxpayers will benefit from the streamlined process, as the e-return system offers user-friendly features and clear instructions.

Summary of Key Points

  • From 2025-26, online tax return filing is mandatory for almost all individual taxpayers.
  • Only four categories—senior citizens, disabled taxpayers, overseas residents, and legal representatives—are exempt.
  • Taxpayers facing technical problems can apply for permission to file paper returns.
  • NBR aims to digitize and simplify tax filing through the e-return system.
