The world’s climate is steadily becoming warmer due to various reasons, and this rising temperature is severely affecting Bangladesh. Both humans and animals are suffering under the scorching heat. Women, children, and the elderly are falling ill as a result of the intense heat wave. Many people are unable to leave their homes, and hospitals across the country are seeing a sharp rise in the number of patients suffering from heat-related illnesses.

The government has issued public health advisories to help people cope with the heat. Due to the extreme temperatures, many of the country’s hard-working laborers are unable to work. Chuadanga district has recorded the highest temperature this month, followed by Jessore. In these districts, people are falling ill at alarming rates. Hospitals in the region are under increased pressure as patients are being admitted with illnesses such as diarrhea, cholera, and dysentery.

Government guidelines to combat the heat wave include:

  • Drinking plenty of safe and pure water
  • Wearing light and loose-fitting clothing
  • Taking frequent showers
  • Avoiding stale or uncovered food
  • Pouring water on rooftops and keeping windows open to reduce indoor temperatures

Special caution has been advised for children, the elderly, pregnant women, rickshaw pullers, construction workers, daily wage earners, and those suffering from high blood pressure or heart disease. Anyone feeling unwell is advised to immediately consult the nearest doctor. Additionally, for medical advice, the public is encouraged to contact the government’s “Health Portal” by calling 16263.

According to NASA, climate change is a gradual process that generally moves in a consistent direction. At present, the Earth’s climate is gradually warming. So, why does it suddenly feel so hot? One major cause is the excessive amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Gases like carbon dioxide and methane trap the sun’s heat, making the planet warmer.

While a certain level of greenhouse gases is necessary to sustain life on Earth, too much leads to excessive global warming. The burning of fossil fuels—such as coal, oil, and gas—significantly increases the levels of carbon dioxide. Additionally, several man-made factors contribute to rising temperatures. These include deforestation, cutting down trees before maturity, pollution from factories, black smoke, and widespread use of non-biodegradable plastic and polythene.

Environmental experts note that during April and May, Bangladesh experiences higher temperatures due to its proximity to the sun. Therefore, extra caution is needed during these months. Unfortunately, in recent days, several people—including garment workers—have died due to the ongoing heat wave.

It is essential for Bangladesh and neighboring countries to take urgent steps to keep this heat wave under control. If we all work together—governments, communities, and individuals—we can hope to create a safer, healthier, and more livable world.
